I love to travel, I love it when my work and travel come together. Sometimes I don’t mean for my work and travel to coincide but they do.

Last year I was in NZ for a ski holiday when Christchurch was hit by an earthquake. The earthquake was a magnitude of 7.4 and Christchurch was declared a state of emergency. The earthquake struck at 4:35am. The photos below are shoots I took that day.

The photographs were published in the December-January issue of Insurance and Risk Professional.

Despite living in Japan for a couple of years and feeling numerous earthquakes, I’d never seen or experienced anything like this before.  I was impressed at how quickly the recovery efforts started and how life seem to continue on.

Christie and Gary’s Wedding at the Point, Albert Park

Monday, January 24th, 2011

I think it is really nice when I meet a couple who’ve been together for a while but have decided to formalise their commitment: to have a wedding. There is so much to celebrate. The speeches are always really genuine and heartfelt, and there are always so many stories. Others see in them what they see in each other.  Their comfort in one another is obvious and their happiness infectious.

Recently I photographed Christie and Gary’s wedding at the Point in Albert park. Christie and Gary live in Adelaide with their three teenage boys. The boys played a major role in the wedding as Gary’s best men, but it was obvious they also played a significant part on Christie’s side too.

These are just a small sample of photos from the wedding…

Bloom Cosmetics magazine feature and cover

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

One of the things I like about my job/chosen career path is that I meet people from all walks of life. I’ve photographed people in the community, politicians, celebrities, business leaders and even a president. But the people I often look most forward to photographing and feel most inspired by are the entrepreneurs who are just doing their thing .  I like hearing their stories. I appreciate how humble they can be.

Recently I met and photographed a feature in Latte Magazine for Emma Isaacs who is the entrepreneur behind Business Chicks.  A successful entrepreneur in her own right, she likes to shine the spotlight on other successful women carving a path in their own chosen profession.  The focus of the current issue is on Natalie Bloom from Bloom Cosmetics. Natalie has managed to build a very successful cosmetics company despite humble beginnings. And to top that, she is also one of the easiest, friendliest people to photograph and work with! Some people are just too awesome!

The images I shot for the magazine cover and feature are below…

And if you don’t mind, I might just toot my own trumpet a little, this is a testimonial Emma wrote about working with me on my linkedin profile:

“Lizzy does a great job of photographing those who’d rather be someplace else! We hired her for a shoot for the Business Chicks magazine, Latte and she was super professional and a delight to work with. Well done Lizzy and thanks so much.”

Emma and Ben’s “uniquely their own” wedding

Monday, January 17th, 2011

So I was thinking “how I will I title this wedding?”  Will I call it Emma and Ben’s stylish wedding, or their vintage wedding, quirky, cute, Australian or homestead wedding? But I couldn’t put a style to it. Other than it was “Emma and Ben’s Wedding”. As that is what it was; a wedding that truly reflected their unique style.

Emma, who is one stylish designer herself, had put so much thought into all of the details, including sourcing suppliers from Etsy and working closely with them to make personalised everything! Every time I looked around I spotted another amazing detail to photograph.

I loved what made the wedding uniquely Australian: the venue was set on a old homestead and surrounded by beautiful old gumtrees. Emma and Ben’s choice of mixing Australian wildflowers into their decorations matched seamlessly with their surroundings.

Emma and Ben were such fun to work with, and nothing was ever a problem. I was extremely flattered at the effort they went to include us. Ben fondly recalled the story of how he realised our table was missing a ‘crepe poof’ at one of the settings. He worked frantically to make another on the very day he was walking down the aisle just to make sure that we didn’t miss out! Doing this may have also given him further appreciation of how difficult they were to make, and the time Emma had put into all the little details!

I thought I’d post something that Emma wrote to Vanessa, my studio assistant, as I felt the very same way about working with Emma and Ben.

“Lizzy made us feel so unbelievable comfortable, our time with her didn’t make us feel like ‘photo time’ was a chore, it was more like chatting with a friend who was really good at taking pictures of us having a great time. Her interpretation of the feeling we were trying to achieve throughout the evening was spot on – we can’t wait to see her final product!”

This is just a small selection of the photos and the details from their wedding day….
