Relaxed Consultant Portraits ~ Mary

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting, having a great chat with and photographing Mary from Career Sheila. Years ago, Mary had corporate portraits of herself taken but she realised she’d like to update them and wanted some images that reflected her personality and business rather than a stiff corporate head shot.

Mary Goldsmith is the consultant behind Career Sheila. Mary works with people at every career stage: young professionals on the move, women returning from parental leave, managers seeking advancement into a senior position, or individuals redirecting their careers altogether. Career Sheila provides consulting, coaching and mentoring for women who are motivated to explore, develop or change their career focus.

Mary has an extensive background Mary combines her extensive corporate and government experience in Human Resources, Executive Search and Selection, Executive Education and Career Transition consulting. I have no doubt she’d be well equipped to help anyone navigate through a career change.

Queens Park ~ Peta and Ben

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Peta and Ben were a ball of laughs to photograph. Peta had mentioned to me that Ben’s fake smile was more of a menacing grimace than a “smile.” So it was to be our mission to capture him acting his natural self and off-guard. Initially Peta talked continually to Ben, making sure he was distracted and unaware of my presence. But eventually they both relaxed into the session and we were able to capture some great photos of them interacting and being themselves.

Peta and Ben are getting married in Trentham. I can’t wait to photograph their wedding now that we’ve worked towards eliminating their wedding photo fears!

Royal Park Portraits ~ Anton and Emma

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

What divine weather we’ve been treated to in Melbourne lately. Warm days with blue skies. The type of weather that makes you want to spend every second lapping up the glorious sunshine. Picnics in the park, laughs with friends on the patio, frisbee on the beach. That kind of weather.

When I met with Anton and Emma for their photo session it was exactly that kind of weather. Perfect for exploring the great expanse that is Royal Park. Emma and Anton enjoy the refuge that is Royal Park because it is close to home and it feels like the city is a zillion miles away. With it’s large native grass expanse and towering gumtrees and areas of unkept scrub it can feel like you are in the Australian bush at times!

Anton and Emma are getting married in Healsville later this year. These are a few shots we got around the park and of the picnic they brought along to enjoy in the sunshine!

Galerie Montmartre ~ Vintage Posters

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

These are some photographs I took for the lovely Galerie Montmartre. Gallerie Montmartre sells beautiful original vintage posters. They have a fantastic gallery warehouse type space in Fitzroy full of these fantastic posters and other gorgeous vintage details. Do pop in if you are in the area. The staff have an in depth knowledge of the origin, quirky details and history of the posters they stock. I can’t promise you won’t be tempted to snap one up for yourself though! We are the proud owners of two of these posters which we have prominently displayed in our home!

Slow Magazine ~ Burmese Train Journey

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

I’d wanted to go to Burma/Myanmar for a long time. I’d also debated about whether it was the right thing to do. Burma has been boycotted by the international community since 1995 because of it’s military dictatorship. We made the decision to go after talking to a friend who lived in Myanmar for some time. He encouraged us to visit Myanmar and see what it was really like, to travel responsibly and tell the world about it’s amazing people and culture. You can see some of the photographs here and a story and images we published in the big issue about a troop of brothers fighting the regime in their own comedic way here.

Dave (my husband) and I have collaborated again and my images and his words have been published in the current Slow magazine. This time it’s about enjoying slow train travel through Burma. It’s a four page feature and a couple of my images have been used on the contents page too!

Kara, Emerson and their story

Monday, September 12th, 2011

I was excited to hear why we would be meeting for our photo shoot at the train station. I was sure there was going to be an interesting story behind this slightly unusual request. And I wasn’t disapointed.

Kara and Emerson met in highschool while dawdling around at the train station after school. Both went to different schools but Emerson can clearly recount exactly where they met on the platform! Due to their special connection with the station Emerson thought it perfect to propose on the train; much to Kara’s suprise and delight.

During the shoot we also spent sometime in the park adjacent to the station where’d they’d always wander through together, taking their time and enjoying each other’s company.

Emerson is a musician and has a bit of that rock star cool- in a very down to earth way. He’s carefully handpicked the band for the wedding. Kara’s especially excited about getting married at the beautiful Emu Bottom Estate and has put some extra thought into the creative details. I’m really looking forward to what sounds like is going to be a super fun day… and seeing Emerson’s Brooklyn born grandmother carve up the dance floor!

Toni and Drew’s Docklands Session

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

When I asked Toni and Drew why they’d picked the Grampians to get married, Toni’s replied “we are closet country people!” Neither Toni nor Drew grew up in the country but they both have a fond affiliation with the country. So it just made sense to them to get married in the Grampians where Toni spend her family holidays growing up.

Toni and Drew have thought really carefully about how to personalise their wedding and really make it their own. I’m so excited to see all the little details they’ve been working on leading up to their special day!

In contrast to their country wedding location we picked the Docklands to take their engagement session portraits. Drew confessed to me that he was a bit nervous at the idea of having his photo session, but hopefully the jitters subsided during the session so that on his wedding day he doesn’t even give the photography a second thought. I think personally, they are both naturals! It helps that they did relax and share plenty of laughs so I could really capture their bubbly and fun personalities.
