Portrait Profile: Civil Engineer, Elisabeth Norman

What do you do? Tell us a bit about what you do.

I’m a civil engineer, working in all things water infrastructure: drinking water treatment and transfer systems, sewerage and wastewater treatment, and a bit of irrigation supply as well.  My involvement in a project can be at the planning stage, through design, all the way to construction and commissioning.

Tell me about how you got into your field.

I’ve always been keen on doing something technical, blending science with practical application.  Civil engineering looked ideal.  The final destination of water was pure and fortuitous chance; a decision made by my employer to allocate me to the discipline.  Now I can’t imagine working in anything else.  Water services are vital to society, and I’m so happy that I can make a real contribution through my work.

What is the best piece of career advice you’ve received?

Received and experienced first hand: just say “yes” to opportunities that present, even if you are worried because you don’t really know what’s in store.  Many of my best and most interesting experiences have come about by saying yes, even though I had no idea what I was getting in to.

Why did you choose to have professional profile photos taken and what will you use your portraits for?

I already needed some updated photos to use in professional CVs, on email and social media.  Added to which, I have a few plans, still in their infancy, for projects outside of the strict 9 to 5 regime.  I really wanted photos that would reflect me in the way I see myself (not always the way the camera sees me): professional but relaxed, and not too serious.

Why did you choose to hire Lizzy C Photography?

The example photos on the website really resonated with me, and I also appreciated the down to earth, practical tone of Lizzy’s philosophy and advice for taking photos on the day.

Tell us about your experience working with her. Were you happy with the results of your shoot?

An excellent experience.  It couldn’t have been easier or more comfortable, and we had a few good laughs along the way, including about my eternal glasses/no glasses conundrum.  I am very pleased with the results.
