Kara, Emerson and their story

Monday, September 12th, 2011

I was excited to hear why we would be meeting for our photo shoot at the train station. I was sure there was going to be an interesting story behind this slightly unusual request. And I wasn’t disapointed.

Kara and Emerson met in highschool while dawdling around at the train station after school. Both went to different schools but Emerson can clearly recount exactly where they met on the platform! Due to their special connection with the station Emerson thought it perfect to propose on the train; much to Kara’s suprise and delight.

During the shoot we also spent sometime in the park adjacent to the station where’d they’d always wander through together, taking their time and enjoying each other’s company.

Emerson is a musician and has a bit of that rock star cool- in a very down to earth way. He’s carefully handpicked the band for the wedding. Kara’s especially excited about getting married at the beautiful Emu Bottom Estate and has put some extra thought into the creative details. I’m really looking forward to what sounds like is going to be a super fun day… and seeing Emerson’s Brooklyn born grandmother carve up the dance floor!

Toni and Drew’s Docklands Session

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

When I asked Toni and Drew why they’d picked the Grampians to get married, Toni’s replied “we are closet country people!” Neither Toni nor Drew grew up in the country but they both have a fond affiliation with the country. So it just made sense to them to get married in the Grampians where Toni spend her family holidays growing up.

Toni and Drew have thought really carefully about how to personalise their wedding and really make it their own. I’m so excited to see all the little details they’ve been working on leading up to their special day!

In contrast to their country wedding location we picked the Docklands to take their engagement session portraits. Drew confessed to me that he was a bit nervous at the idea of having his photo session, but hopefully the jitters subsided during the session so that on his wedding day he doesn’t even give the photography a second thought. I think personally, they are both naturals! It helps that they did relax and share plenty of laughs so I could really capture their bubbly and fun personalities.

Anthea and Jim.

Anthea and Jim. Timeless. Classic. Sweet.

Anthea and Jim are just lovely, together and as individuals. Anthea and Jim met through two very special people in their lives who thought they’d be perfect together. Obviously they knew them both very well as Anthea and Jim are getting married later this year.  They both come from Greek backgrounds and have just come back from Greece where they met each others extended family. It is obvious that family is very important to them both and that they will play a very important role on their wedding day.

These photos are taken in the museum grounds where Anthea and Jim had their first kiss. Anthea tells me Jim was quite the gentleman in their courting days.

Erin and Mike’s St Patricks and Yering Meadows Wedding

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Earlier this year I photographed Erin and Mike’s wedding at St Patrick’s in Lilydale and Yering Meadows. The day started off with lots of family and a little bit of chaos at Erin’s parents home. But you could hope for nothing less with four very cute and inquisitive flower girls running around! Everything came together without a hitch and it was obvious that Mike was the happiest man around! I’ve never seen a bigger smile!  After the ceremony we all headed to Yering Meadows and enjoyed the sun setting over the vineyards and surrounding hills. It couldn’t have been a prettier backdrop.

Moira and David’s Sails on the Bay Wedding

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

This cold and dreary weather has me reminiscing about warmer days. Moira and David were married last month on a day the sun surprisingly came out to play.

They were married as the sun set over the bay in a beautifully relaxed ceremony at sails on the bay.  They streamed their ceremony live to friends and family who couldn’t make it and included a reading that a friend wrote specially.

Here are a few highlights from a fantastic day.

Tea Ceremony and Wedding at Rippon Lea and Merrimu Receptions

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

This may be a my biggest blog post ever, but this was a big day!

Mary tells me that their wedding day started when she and the girls woke at 3:30 a.m. to begin preparations. You wouldn’t know it though! I’ve never met such a bright and chipper group of girls. Her lovely bridesmaids had travelled from near and far to be there. They couldn’t have been more genuinely pleased and excited for their friend and were always eager to be by her side. Nothing was too much trouble for Mary and every time I asked her if she was ok, she’d say “I’m absolutely fine; don’t worry about me. I can clamber up this hill, heels and all”. She didn’t even seem concerned that she was going to be blown off the top of the hill, even though Melbourne treated us to gale force winds!

Hoi was great fun to work with too. I believe that he thought he was the luckiest man alive to be marrying Mary. It was obvious to everyone that he absolutely adores her. Despite the jokes that were made in speeches, the way he looks at her and talks about her says it all.

The day started early with a traditional tea ceremony. It was fantastic to see all them incorporate elements of traditional Chinese and Vietnamese culture into their wedding day. Personally, it reminded me of getting together with my Chinese family in Malaysia.

Mary and Hoi were married under a beautiful old tree in the gardens of Rippon Lea Estate in a civil ceremony. They went on to enjoy an eight-course banquet at Merrimu Receptions, where their impressively choreographed wedding dance was a highlight of the evening.

Laura and David’s Williamstown Wedding at Pelicans Landing

Friday, April 1st, 2011

What fun in Williamstown. Laura and David couldn’t have chosen a more relaxed spot for their wedding. The guests were easy-going, the sun came out to play and the drinks were flowing. Laura’s charm and quick wit and David’s no-worries attitude kept a cool atmosphere for the whole afternoon.

Everything in one spot meant an idle stroll through Williamstown to get around to different locations. I loved the separate group photos of all the male and all the female guests, what a great idea. After the group photos we were spoilt for choice with photo locations. The jetty was brilliant fun, well, at least for anyone not wearing high-heels.

The bridal photos done, Laura and David retired to their magnificent suite to relax with family and friends before heading to their reception at Pelicans Landing.

Tim and Alison’s Wedding St Carthage’s, One Fitzroy St, Melbourne and South Melbourne

Monday, March 28th, 2011

The best thing about working with lovely people is that they surround themselves with lovely people. Tim and Alison are both lovely, fun and relaxed, so it was no surprise that their family and friends were welcoming, fun and relaxed too. Tim and Alison live in Singapore and have lived away for many years.  It was therefore a truly joyous occasion for them to be back in Melbourne, celebrating their wedding with friends and family from all over Australia and the world.

Nothing was a problem for Tim and Alison. I found it very pleasant hanging out with them, their bridal party, their friends and family. After the ceremony we wandered around the CBD exploring laneways and lamp posts, ensuring that we capture some of Melbourne’s earliest and finest architecture, to which Alison fondly relates as “Melbourne.”  We then headed to the beach to run the sand through our toes, and then celebrated the night away as the sun set over St Kilda from the balcony of One Fitzroy St.

Rachael and Brad ~ Studley Park

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

If you’ve got a keen eye, you may think you’ve seen Rachael on this blog before. She has in fact featured a couple of times alongside her sister Jess, as I photographed Jess and Chris’s wedding last year! She came along to their engagement session and was bridesmaid at their wedding. This time however, the spotlight is on her and her fiance Brad!

Brad proposed to Rachael atop the Sydney harbour bridge. He even concocted an elaborate surprise to get her up there! They are getting married in September at St Patrick’s Cathedral. I am really looking forward to photographing their wedding and catching up with the family once again!

Renae and Darren’s Kyneton Wedding at Highbank and the Royal George Hotel

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Roses, laughter, food, family and celebration were themes resonating through Renae and Darren’s wedding day.

Renae and Darren were married at Highbank in Kyneton and held their reception at the Royal George Hotel.

Despite the heavy (and almost torrential) rains the night before their wedding, it stayed clear all day. In fact, the rains just made the surrounding countryside look greener and more lush from atop the hill at Highbank. Renae’s mother is a marriage celebrant and conducted what was a very sincere and emotional ceremony.

Sweet definitely comes to mind when I think of Darren on his wedding day. Not only did he surprise his lovely wife with earrings on her wedding day, but when I first saw him and mentioned that Renae looked absolutely beautiful he agreed without even having seen her! Hearing that almost made me tear up! How sweet is that?

Renae and Darren decided quite early on that they wanted a day that celebrated their union, along with good food and wine. And that they did! Their wedding ceremony was followed by a lavish high tea in a beautiful country setting. Renae and Darren gathered up their nearest and dearest and put on an amazing spread in their beautiful country estate. They had help though; Tonia Todman hosted the day and ensured they didn’t have to dust off grandma’s collection of cups and saucers and make the lamingtons themselves!

At one point I caught Andy, my assistant, digging into a pink frosted cupcake and looking a little faint. I asked him if he was ok and he remarked that the cupcakes were so good they were making him giddy!

Drinks and canapés followed at the Royal George Hotel. The intimacy of the day was maintained with everyone seated at a single long table, upon which many glasses of wine and course after course of delicious food was served.

I am now Kyneton’s newest and biggest fan. It was such a beautiful and relaxed placed to hold a wedding. I can’t wait to return…

Thanks go to all the Kyneton crew who were an absolute pleasure to work with. Caris and Vanessa the florists from Prunella, Melinda Wain the makeup artist and Tonia Todman from Highbank.

Alison and Tim’s Urban Portraits

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

I met Alison and Tim for the first time on Monday. However, we first spoke many many months ago when they called from Singapore and I chatted to them from my studio in Collingwood.  Alison and Tim live in Singapore but are getting married in Melbourne on Saturday.

It was really nice to meet them and hear more about their wedding day, wander the streets and snap a few portraits along the way… I am really looking forward to photographing their wedding on Saturday. It promises to be a very relaxed day!

Michaela & Matt’s St Carthage’s Wedding in Parkville

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Michaela and Matt live in London but came back to Melbourne to get married. They had a really sweet and personalised ceremony at St Carthage’s Church followed by a relaxed reception at Walter’s Wine Bar at Southbank. We didn’t venture far for their photos as we really didn’t need to! With all the rain we’d had it was so beautiful, green and lush around Parkville and Royal parade, so we set off on foot and captured the Melbourne greenery amongst the inner-city streets. As Melbourne held a special place in both their hearts, they wanted it to feature but not in a touristy postcard way. They wanted it to feature in a more subtle and heritage inspired way.

Sara and Nima’s Wedding at The Prince in St Kilda

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I like Sara and Nima’s style. They didn’t get caught up in the need to be conventional, to follow tradition or add a lot of extra faff. They just picked out what was important to them and went with it.

Sara and Nima had always planned to meet before the wedding ceremony to take some photos, so that the ceremony could run straight into the reception. We’d planned to meet in a local park for this “first look”, but just before the wedding Sara rang me and said that things were getting a bit logistically complicated, and that Nima was just going to come around to pick her up at the house. So that he did! Nima was greeted at the front door by the warm embrace of Sara and her family, which was followed by excited squeals. It was truly a unique, completely uncontrived moment. A unique moment for me to capture on camera. That is what weddings are all about—the unique moments.

It was so much fun wandering around St Kilda with Sara and Nima. They just smiled, laughed and joked the whole time. The ceremony was on the deck of the Prince, which was shared with their nearest and dearest who had travelled from all over the world to be there. The sun setting over the bay and St Kilda was the perfect backdrop for their laid-back reception.

It was a truly special day.

Christie and Gary’s Wedding at the Point, Albert Park

Monday, January 24th, 2011

I think it is really nice when I meet a couple who’ve been together for a while but have decided to formalise their commitment: to have a wedding. There is so much to celebrate. The speeches are always really genuine and heartfelt, and there are always so many stories. Others see in them what they see in each other.  Their comfort in one another is obvious and their happiness infectious.

Recently I photographed Christie and Gary’s wedding at the Point in Albert park. Christie and Gary live in Adelaide with their three teenage boys. The boys played a major role in the wedding as Gary’s best men, but it was obvious they also played a significant part on Christie’s side too.

These are just a small sample of photos from the wedding…
