Portrait of a film maker

Friday, February 4th, 2011

And as I was saying… I get to meet some really interesting people in my line of work. Dom is a lawyer by trade but he has a passion for documentary film making. Recently he went to Mongolia and filmed a documentary there. I don’t know about you but last time I was in Mongolia I ended up lost in the Gobi desert with a blue combi 70s van as transport and a driver who we affectionately called Shamus. But that is another story…

Dom was there on a much more important mission. He was documenting the changes in Mongolia due to urbanisation. He made a documentary and magazines wanted to write about him so we took some photos for them!

In case any of you are wondering “what blue combie?”

Here are a few photos I look in Mongolia when I was there in about 2005. These are taken on film… remember those days?

Interiour Venue Photography~ Hazeldene Yarra Valley

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Sorry, it’s been a bit quiet of late on the blog, I’ve just returned from overseas. But more about that later.

This shoot was for Hazeldene in the Yarra Valley. Hazeldene is a beautiful retreat in the Yarra Valley. It is very popular for weddings but Hazeldene wanted some photographs which also showcased their accommodation options and facilities for corporate clients. It’s a stunning property with heaps of nooks and crannies to enjoy the surroundings. I highly recommend you check it out! I am thinking it’s be perfect for Lizzy C’s next corporate retreat!

Thanks to Rachael for assisting me on this one.

Most often in Japan cities are filled with national chains.  The same coffee shops, restaurants, isakayas (Japanese pub for eating and drinking), department stores and the like can be found in every city.  When I lived in Japan I used to go to one Isakaya which I thought was so individual and cute.  I discovered on this trip, when in Hiroshima 700km away that my quaint isakaya was also part of a national chain.  So that is why it is really cool, when you come across cafes, restaurants and bars which are owner operated and have their own unique individuality.  Quite often you are serviced by the owner who is quite open to a chat over the counter. I think these guys are always pretty cool, becasue they have steped outside the square and chosen to do something quite different in a place where you are often expected to follow the crowd.

These are some photographs I took of a cafe in Kyoto, Japan of the owner Takaaki Matsumoto and his cafe Ichigo Ichie.  It is tucked away in the inner suburban sprawl of Kyoto and is a welcoming front of colour in a sprawling mass of 3 storey apartment buildings.

Adioso @ the hive Melbourne | Melbourne Photographer

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Once a month I photograph the Hive events at the order of Melbourne. Hive is a networking event for entrepreneurs.  Each month they get entrepreneaurs to speak about what they’ve done and how they got there.  It is really interesting to hear about sucessful entrepreneurs got to where they are today.  The speakers are usually brutally honest about how hard they’ve worked, how much they’ve struggled and luckily how rewarding it all ends up being.

The most recent Hive event’s guest speakers were Tom and Fenn from Adioso. Adioso is a fully flexible and natural language flight tool.  Basically, it is an awesome way to find and book flights online.  I’ve personally used it numerous times and can’t stop raving about it…It just makes so much sense.  You can type really vague searches such as Melbourne to Japan in October and it finds you all the discount flights for that route in October instead of having to search specifically for each airport in Japan or every date in October.

I actually first met Tom and Fenn about a year ago and they are just lovely down to earth guys who on a backpacking trip came up with an idea…  So support adioso.com and keep an eye on their story as I am sure it will be the next big thing…

The Hive Event | Event Photographer Melbourne

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Last night I took photographs for the Hive’s monthly networking event for entrepreneurs. The Hive is really cool as it is free to attend, very relaxed and held monthly in Melbourne and Brisbane.  Each month they also have a speaker making it worth going, if you want to get inspired!  Last night was the founder of Flexicar, Monique Conheady.  Flexicar is an awesome car sharing initiative.  Check it out if you are considering a new car, only need a second car occasionally or want a cost effective alternative to Taxis or rental cars.  It might save you money and the added bonus is it’s great for the environment!

Back to The Hive…

The guys had been taking photos of the event on their iphones, which “surprisingly” they weren’t getting images that illustrated the relaxed atmosphere of the event or the crowds they were pulling in.  So along came me… and even though I had an iphone in my pocket, I used my slr to capture a few images (some seen in this post) which I think might better illustrate the event…

Leave a comment if you’d like to defend the iphone’s camera quality!
