Jacqui and Marc’s Art Deco Wedding at the Botanic gardens and Circa, The Prince

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

Jacqui and Marc – A Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne Wedding followed by a reception at Circa, The Prince St Kilda.

Jacqui and Marc’s art deco-inspired wedding had us feeling like we’d been teleported back to the roaring ’20s. They filled their event with vintage details and bold surprises that kept everyone smiling throughout the day.

The wedding party primped at St. Kilda’s stylish Prince Hotel, where Jacqui was cinched into her stunning lace gown. The ceremony was in the Botanical Gardens, and bright red umbrellas stood at the ready in case of bad weather. Alas, skies were clear, but the umbrellas made for great photo props!

After the ceremony, we managed to steal the newlyweds away to wander around the historic streets of St. Kilda, the fitting backdrop for this timeless couple’s portraits. We snapped a few shots with their celebrant’s fire engine-red Vespa — a perfect match for Jacqui’s red lips and shoes — and then headed back to the Prince Hotel for a reception on the deck.

Guests sipped champagne out of vintage coupes, then moved inside for dinner, which was served at two long community tables. Jacqui and Marc are known for their dinner parties, and they wanted to capture the same intimate feel at their wedding. We’d say they definitely accomplished that goal as guests were laughing and chattering throughout the meal.

Jacqui had admitted that she was nervous about her first dance with her father, but they pulled it off seamlessly and went on to boogie on the dance floor and raise a toast to an old favorite. Cheers to Jacqui and Marc!

Julia and Ged’s Emu Bottom Homestead Wedding

Julia and Ged’s Emu Bottom Wedding

It’s not every day we get to shoot a wedding where the groomsmen rock bright blue suits and the bride willingly sports a set of Groucho glasses. But that’s exactly what happened at Julia and Ged’s adorable wedding at the Emu Bottom Homestead in Sunbury. The vintage-inspired affair was relaxed and rustic — not to mention pure fun.

Julia was nervous when she arrived at Emu Bottom, but as soon as she saw her sister and four bridesmaids — all decked out in fashionable pink frocks — the fear seemed to melt away. Ged’s aunty Mary Anne Egan officiated, and the ceremony was full of sweet stories about how the couple met.

Julia scoured wedding blogs like Polka Dot Bride and Style Me Pretty for wedding-planning inspiration, and there were DIY touches and a subtle book theme throughout (Julia’s a bit of a bookworm). “I worked really hard and stressed a lot coming up to the wedding but it all came together in the most amazing way,” she told us after the big day. “We had some really great family and friends helping us and everyone seemed to have had a great time. Ged and I have talked about nothing else since! I think everything we feel for each other came out in the wedding, making it just a huge celebration with a great feeling.” We couldn’t agree more.

We had a blast working with Julia and Ged, and we’re so happy they felt the same way. Julia had this to say: “They made everything so easy for everyone. They were super-organised (especially with the family photos — this helped immensely!) and just genuinely excited and enthused about the day. I never felt like any of the shots were staged and from the little I have already seen, they’ve captured exactly what I wanted: relaxed, candid, and beautiful photos. I would be so thrilled to recommend Lizzy to everyone I know because I know that they would always be in great hands!”

Charlie and Fiona’s Fenix Restaurant Wedding

Charlie and Fiona’s Modern with a twist of traditional Lebanese Fenix Restaurant Wedding

I’ve never come across a more easy-going, relaxed couple than Charlie and Fiona. Even just moments before their wedding ceremony was due to start, Charlie waltzed up, all smiles and hugs, as the priest ushered him into the church.
Fiona arrived with the girls, looking stunning and adorned with a gorgeous lace veil, which was a family heirloom that had been in the family since the 19th century!

After the ceremony, we headed to the Fitzroy Gardens, where wandering through the dappled light of the spectacular avenue of trees seemed the perfect fit for their beautiful, relaxed attitude.
Fiona and Charlie arrived at Felix Restaurant with a spectacular entrance, which included a troop of traditional Lebanese drummers and dancers! The guests joined in, and Charlie and Fiona led them in a very fun and energetic performance.

It was a fitting start to an enjoyable evening, with a spectacular view over the river from Felix.

Art Deco Wedding St Kilda Botanical Gardens and Ormond Hall

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

It all came together perfectly for Nat and Toby on their wedding day. The sun was shinning, they were happy and relaxed, and Marta, Nat’s dear friend and bridesmaid who had only just given birth earlier that week was able to make it with her very tiny new born, Pia. It was just lovely to see how happy Nat was to have Marta there and playing a special role in the wedding.

It was obvious that Nat and Toby felt honoured and loved by all of the people who helped bring the day together. Lots of people pitched in and helped them make the day uniquely theirs. Cars were restored, invitations were specially designed, illustrated and sewn together, songs were sung by friends and family and people came from all over to celebrate. In fact, Nat’s bridesmaids all came from different states!

The ceremony in the Rose Garden of the St Kilda Botanical Gardens was spectacular, with lots of colour thanks to the roses being in bloom. Nat outshone all of the flowers though!

As a big fan of the Art Deco era I couldn’t help but notice how Nat and Toby seamlessly integrated many Art Deco elements into the their wedding, including holding their wedding reception at the magnificent Ormond Hall, a glorious old Art Deco styled theatre. Nat’s wedding dress featured beautiful Art Deco stitching, which was reminiscent of the famous Chrysler Building in New York City. Even their wedding invitation included a stunning Art Deco border, which resembled the doorways of St Kilda’s Palais Theatre that Nat and Toby both adore.

Ormond Hall holds a special place in my heart, as my husband and I were married there just over four years ago. It was really lovely to go back there with such a special couple so close to my own wedding anniversary.

Lauren and David: An Emu bottom Homestead Wedding

Monday, October 8th, 2012

Melbourne’s weather has been all over the place of late. It sure has lived up to its four-seasons-in-one-day reputation. However, that being said, the weather was no less than perfect for Lauren and David’s wedding day. Not that Lauren was expecting anything less; her nickname is “the weather fairy” for a good reason!

Lauren and David had a very sweet ceremony on the lawn of the beautiful old Emu Bottom Homestead in Sunbury, where they also had their reception. Lauren and David are both doctors who met during their postgraduate medical studies, and now work together as interns in the same hospital. Their respect and love for each other is obvious, and I think I can safely say that I have not seen a more smitten and happy groom than David when he is around Lauren. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to meet them both, and to photograph their special day.

Here is a preview of what we captured:

A Beach hotel Mordialloc Wedding

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

The lovely Mike and Mikki celebrated their wedding in a beautiful and relaxed lunchtime reception at The Bridge Hotel in Mordialloc. It was so nice for Mikki to be able to share this special day with her family and close friends, who came all the way from Japan to celebrate with her. It was an intimate day with just their nearest and dearest in attendance. Much laughter and tears were shared with the happy couple.

As if by magic, the bad weather predicted for the day held off and the the sun came out to play. This gave us the perfect opportunity to stroll around the canals and get some lovely portraits of Mike and Mikki. Take a look at the photos below, and I’m sure that you’ll agree that they are a gorgeous couple who had a stunning wedding.

Mt Rael Wedding ~ Healsville

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

When I was putting this post together, I couldn’t help but smile to myself as I remembered back to Anton and Emma’s Wedding day. I couldn’t help but break into a grin as I looked over the photos of Anton smiling broadly throughout the day: the genuine elation on his face when he saw the gorgeous Emma all dressed up and ready to go, the happiness that shone through when Emma hugged him after their first kiss as a married couple, and his Cheshire-cat-like grin when he turned to his nearest and dearest at the conclusion of their beautiful ceremony.

Look through the photos below and I am sure you won’t be able to smother a smile either!

The details:

Emma and Anton were married at Mt Rael retreat on a beautiful summer day. We met at their stunning Healesville accommodation to take some photos prior to the ceremony so that they could join their guests at the conclusion of the ceremony. Emma’s super cute style shone through in all their wedding details and I personally couldn’t help but swoon when I saw her in her gorgeous tea length dress. There was a little incident with a groom who forgot his pants, but nothing is too much of an issue when Emma and Anton are involved. Let’s just say it’s lucky that Andrew who was assisting and shooting with me on the day happens to be also wearing a grey suit. We don’t just come with cameras… There are always plenty of laughs!

St Patrick’s Cathedral and Lakeside Wedding ~ Rachael and Brad

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

It was an absolute pleasure to photograph Rachael and Brad’s wedding. They are both just lovely. Rachael is extremely thoughtful and polite. She didn’t have a single frazzled moment  throughout what was a truly joyous wedding day. She just laughed, and enjoyed her wedding day. Nothing ever being too much trouble. And well Brad. He just kept grinning. Grinning with happiness and pride. His beautiful Rachael was now his wife!

Turning up to photograph Rachael and Brad’s wedding was like being reunited with old friends again. So many familiar faces. I’ve now photographed Rachel’s brother, Mike three times! All three times he has been a groomsman. Don’t think we didn’t joke that next time it must be his turn! Rachael’s lovely sister Jess and her husband Chris came over from Dubai to play important roles as Bridesmaid and Groomsmen. I photographed their wedding last year.  It was fantastic to catch up with them again!

Rachael and Brad were married at the amazingly impressive St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne and had their reception at Lakeside in Taylor’s Lakes.

Kara, Emerson and their story

Monday, September 12th, 2011

I was excited to hear why we would be meeting for our photo shoot at the train station. I was sure there was going to be an interesting story behind this slightly unusual request. And I wasn’t disapointed.

Kara and Emerson met in highschool while dawdling around at the train station after school. Both went to different schools but Emerson can clearly recount exactly where they met on the platform! Due to their special connection with the station Emerson thought it perfect to propose on the train; much to Kara’s suprise and delight.

During the shoot we also spent sometime in the park adjacent to the station where’d they’d always wander through together, taking their time and enjoying each other’s company.

Emerson is a musician and has a bit of that rock star cool- in a very down to earth way. He’s carefully handpicked the band for the wedding. Kara’s especially excited about getting married at the beautiful Emu Bottom Estate and has put some extra thought into the creative details. I’m really looking forward to what sounds like is going to be a super fun day… and seeing Emerson’s Brooklyn born grandmother carve up the dance floor!

Tea Ceremony and Wedding at Rippon Lea and Merrimu Receptions

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

This may be a my biggest blog post ever, but this was a big day!

Mary tells me that their wedding day started when she and the girls woke at 3:30 a.m. to begin preparations. You wouldn’t know it though! I’ve never met such a bright and chipper group of girls. Her lovely bridesmaids had travelled from near and far to be there. They couldn’t have been more genuinely pleased and excited for their friend and were always eager to be by her side. Nothing was too much trouble for Mary and every time I asked her if she was ok, she’d say “I’m absolutely fine; don’t worry about me. I can clamber up this hill, heels and all”. She didn’t even seem concerned that she was going to be blown off the top of the hill, even though Melbourne treated us to gale force winds!

Hoi was great fun to work with too. I believe that he thought he was the luckiest man alive to be marrying Mary. It was obvious to everyone that he absolutely adores her. Despite the jokes that were made in speeches, the way he looks at her and talks about her says it all.

The day started early with a traditional tea ceremony. It was fantastic to see all them incorporate elements of traditional Chinese and Vietnamese culture into their wedding day. Personally, it reminded me of getting together with my Chinese family in Malaysia.

Mary and Hoi were married under a beautiful old tree in the gardens of Rippon Lea Estate in a civil ceremony. They went on to enjoy an eight-course banquet at Merrimu Receptions, where their impressively choreographed wedding dance was a highlight of the evening.

Sara and Nima’s Wedding at The Prince in St Kilda

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I like Sara and Nima’s style. They didn’t get caught up in the need to be conventional, to follow tradition or add a lot of extra faff. They just picked out what was important to them and went with it.

Sara and Nima had always planned to meet before the wedding ceremony to take some photos, so that the ceremony could run straight into the reception. We’d planned to meet in a local park for this “first look”, but just before the wedding Sara rang me and said that things were getting a bit logistically complicated, and that Nima was just going to come around to pick her up at the house. So that he did! Nima was greeted at the front door by the warm embrace of Sara and her family, which was followed by excited squeals. It was truly a unique, completely uncontrived moment. A unique moment for me to capture on camera. That is what weddings are all about—the unique moments.

It was so much fun wandering around St Kilda with Sara and Nima. They just smiled, laughed and joked the whole time. The ceremony was on the deck of the Prince, which was shared with their nearest and dearest who had travelled from all over the world to be there. The sun setting over the bay and St Kilda was the perfect backdrop for their laid-back reception.

It was a truly special day.

Christie and Gary’s Wedding at the Point, Albert Park

Monday, January 24th, 2011

I think it is really nice when I meet a couple who’ve been together for a while but have decided to formalise their commitment: to have a wedding. There is so much to celebrate. The speeches are always really genuine and heartfelt, and there are always so many stories. Others see in them what they see in each other.  Their comfort in one another is obvious and their happiness infectious.

Recently I photographed Christie and Gary’s wedding at the Point in Albert park. Christie and Gary live in Adelaide with their three teenage boys. The boys played a major role in the wedding as Gary’s best men, but it was obvious they also played a significant part on Christie’s side too.

These are just a small sample of photos from the wedding…

Michaela and Matt’s Urban Melbourne Portraits

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Michaela and Matt are getting married just after Christmas. I only met Michaela and Matt for the first time on Friday. Just over a week before their wedding. Michaela and Matt live in London and are back in Melbourne for their wedding and a brief stopover for Christmas.

Matt almost immediately mentioned that he didn’t really like having his photo taken and found it rather awkward. I didn’t take it personally that he wasn’t too keen to hang out with me…It’s pretty much what everyone says at some point before having their photo taken!

We talked about how partly the reason behind this session is to dispel any discomforts about having your photo taken, and an opportunity to just act yourself and for me to capture just that.

Looking at these photographs. I think their personalities come shinning through.

Michaela and Matt will be my last wedding for 2010. I think it’ll be a great way to end the year!

A Yarra River Wedding

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Last weekend I photographed Michelle and Simon’s wedding on the bank of the Yarra. It seems that Michelle and Simon will have a very luck filled marriage, as it rained a fair bit on their wedding day. Despite the fact that they came very close to having to move their ceremony across the river to the Studley Park Boathouse it hardly fazed them at all - a testament to both their lovely and relaxed personalities.  The ceremony was beautiful, and the intermittent rain didn’t bother anyone; everyone just put up their umbrellas and continued on. The sun shone through, right at the end.  It was as if they’d planned it that way.

We got some fantastic photographs around the river and at the Studley Park Boathouse, and it was really only right at the end when the rain started to pour, so Michelle and Simon went inside and continued to enjoy the evening with their family and friends.

My assistant Ryo did a great job protecting the camera gear while I was shooting by holding an umbrella over me- and getting very wet himself! It was almost comical when we were both huddled outside under an umbrella in the rain photographing the rings (last shot in this blog post) and he was holding an umbrella, a reflector and extra equipment. I wish we’d had someone to take a photo of us!

E-session at the Melbourne Botanic Gardens

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Since I am working on numerous things at the moment, I thought I’d blog a photo from Simon and Michelle’s e-session from the weekend. Simon and Michelle are absolutely lovely so it was an absolute pleasure to spend an afternoon walking around the botanic gardens with them on Sunday. I am really looking forward to photographing their wedding at Studley Park Boathouse next month.
