Row Row Row Your Boat: Jen + Stu’s Waterfront Wedding at Studley Park Boathouse

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

A lot of the brides we’ve worked with over the years have planned dramatic entrances to their weddings, but this might just be our favorite yet: Jen arrived at the Studley Park Boathouse in a wooden row boat lovingly restored by Jen’s father. Though Jen was a bit nervous about taking to the water in her wedding gown, she pulled it off seamlessly, and it set the tone for a super-stylish, vintage-inspired wedding.

Jen and her now-husband Stu, who met working for the Melbourne Fire Brigade, dressed the part for the old-fashioned affair — Stu wore a tweed suit from England, and Jen wore a timeless lace-adorned dress and carried a parasol in the boat. Even the guests got in on the theme, with some wearing bow ties, tweed, and even short pants with high socks.

Stu and Jen styled the wedding themselves, showing off their love of nature by using native Australian plants, herbs and chili peppers to decorate the aisle. We also loved the colorful bentwood chairs and stools they chose for the ceremony.

Another detail we adored: Jen’s engagement ring, which Stu had specially made using glass they’d collected on a beach while heliskiing in Russia.

We loved spending time with this adventurous couple, and when it was all over, we felt as if we’d made two new friends. Luckily, it seems like they felt the same way. “Having Lizzy at our wedding felt like having an old friend doing the photos for us

with the added bonus of knowing we were going to have beautiful professional

photos to remember our special day by. Lizzy made us comfortable, she was

professional, and made it relaxed and fun,” Jen told us. “She was even willing and happy to take her camera in a row boat to capture the special moments of our rowing from the ceremony to the reception.” We’re always willing to get a little wet in the name of good wedding photos.

An Australian Rustic Wedding at Emu Bottom Homestead

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013

Chantell and James’ wedding had a lovely rustic country feel to it. So much thought had gone into collecting lovely vintage and rustic details leading up to the wedding. Not that Chantell minding trawling through antique stores, where she found gems such as the old school desk which they used as a signing table, wooden crates, an antique clock and tricycle for for the aisle. There was a strong Australian theme, with gum nuts and gum leaves adorning the tables, along with hessian bunting and table runners. Chantell and James even made jam from berries they’d picked for each of the guest to take home with them.

The Emu Bottom Homestead, with its beautiful big old tree in the cottage garden, was a fitting background for their vows. The storm clouds rolled in, providing a cooling and much-appreciated temperature drop, but waited patiently until the conclusion of the ceremony and the group photo in the gardens that Chantell especially wanted. The storm clouds eventually opened up, but only briefly, creating a beautiful and dramatic dark grey sky, which gave the Australian bush setting a sense of drama and depth, and made for some amazing photographs!

I’d love to also share these lovely words from Chantell and James.

“Lizzy and Clara were an absolute pleasure to have in attendance on our wedding day. They were so unobtrusive, many times throughout the day we had no idea where they were shooting!

Lizzy’s bright and bubbly nature was very relaxing on the day (and also during our engagement shoot), making us feel as though we were having a picture taken by a friend. As two camera shy people Lizzy had us feel at ease in front of the camera and made the experience far less daunting.  When the weather went South during the portrait shoot they kept the bride calm and had alternative photo locations in mind.

Overall we can’t speak highly enough about Lizzy & her photography. Thank you Lizzy”

A Vintage Inspired Wedding ~ Fairfield Boathouse Wedding

When I first met Allison and Barney, it was instantly obvious how different their personalities were but how well they complimented each other. Their wedding day was a fantastic reflection of their personalities, connection to each other and to their guests, family and bridal party. Allison and Barney were married on the banks of the Fairfield boathouse which then flowed into their cocktail reception at the boathouse. As the sun set, Duck Musique did a fantastic job of entertaining the guests as they sipped cocktails or took the row boats out on the river. As the music floated out across the river and the guests moved around the boathouse, it actually felt like you’d stepped back into a Saturday afternoon in the 1920s.  Ally and Barney looked super swish, and Allison too looked like she had stepped out of the 1920′s.  When we first met, Ally mentioned her dress would be from Gwendolynne Burkin.  I often stop and admire Gwendolynne’s dresses as Gwendolynne’s store is right around the corner from my studio. Her dresses are amazing and often have a beautiful vintage influence.  Ally’s dress suited her perfectly and looked amazing!

Congratulations barney and Allison! It was a beautiful Wedding day that I was honoured to be a part of!

J & B’s Retro Inspired Wedding

Despite the massive thunderstorm and potential flooding, in true Melbourne style the weather turned around completely for Ben and Jessamy’s wedding!

Talking of true Melbourne style, check out the bride and groom!

Melissa Jacob from the ceremony store conducted Ben and Jessamy’s relaxed and quite amusing ceremony at the St Kilda botanic gardens which was followed by croquet in the gardens.

Ben and Jessamy have fond connections with St Kilda and liked the idea of including the urban landscape in their wedding photos.  So we wandered from the ceremony to the reception and snapped some great shots on the way.  Ben even became a part of the city landscape when a pigeon resting on an eve above decided to drop his business on Ben’s shirt!  Ben and Jessamy weren’t phased at all, we had a good laugh and continued on! See photo of Jessamy tenderly wiping off said poop from Ben…

Ben and Jessamy I wish you all the best of luck (not that you’ll need it, thanks to that pigeon!)
